Fearful Emotions
Experiencing intense emotions (ex. fear, guilt, anger), along with physical and/or bodily sensations, is totally normal. Yes, even the Pope and Billy Graham experience fear and anger. It's important that one has the tools necessary to deal with these emotions in a healthy fashion, so they don't become strongholds
Excellent advice from Dr. Gail Brenner, as to what one can do when experiencing a strong / intense emotion:
1. Focus your conscious mind faculty on a few, slow, deep breaths
2. Focus your conscious mind faculty on the physical sensations in your body that you’re experiencing. Love them like your children and welcome them like a long lost friend.
3. Focus your conscious mind faculty in the peaceful field of simply being present and aware (i.e. what am I seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, or smelling)
Christians can add two more steps to the above recommendations for emotions of fear
4. Use our conscious mind faculty to gently proclaim scripture truth: "I, conscious mind, Holy Spirit, and Soul, don't worry about life, my body, or tomorrow". (Gospel of Matthew)
5. Use our conscious mind faculty to give (cast) the care (anxiety) to God: "God, this care's yours, thanks for taking it". (1 Peter 5:7)
